Family Violence: A Chance to Heal

This workshop reviews the case history and the incredible recovery of
one young man who was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Tests had indicated that he suffered from severe physical, emotional,
and suspect sexual abuse. Additionally, he had witnessed physical and emotional violence against his mother and sister.

Prior to treatment this thirteen-year old boy displayed aggressive and destructive behavior. His symptoms were profound. He growled and snarled like a caged animal. He reported hearing voices and had volatile nightmares. He was removed from schools and day care centers because of severe behavioral problems. But today, he is thriving. He is in the 98 percentile academically and he is gifted in sports and art.

This presentation discusses and examines the therapeutic techniques
that successfully lead one child through the recovery process and how advocated can help other children reach the same goal. Because healing
is a lifetime process, more work is needed. A comprehensive analysis examines what treatment modality is next and summarizes how the plan can help other professionals understand the needs of children of family violence.

The compelling part of this presentation is that the young man mentioned above is the presenter's nephew. Ironically, Ms. Dalpiaz has worked with children of family violence since 1984. And now together she and her nephew are working for the future of other children.
